It is as if many different elements have come together to form an overall picture. The concept was a treatise on an imaginary journey from southern to northern Japan consisting of various texts, sketches, drawings, images and photographs, all leading to a house, the Japanese house. Originally The Japanese House was pure fiction. I had clearly defined in my head what the house should look like, and which materials could be used. But then I asked an architect to design and work out the real house for the exhibition. I gave the architect, Alexandra Kern, total freedom. My only wish was that the house was actually habitable, with everything you need in a house - toilet, bathroom, kitchen. But apart from this the built house is her own approach.
