EXPANDING CITIES

Expanding Cities’ is the title of one of Buffoli’s latest works (2024). Again five cities. But this time the artist focusses on one of the most pressing contemporary issues: overpopulation. On large screen prints (paper, 1682 mm x 1189 mm) he presents a minimalist snapshot of cities sprawling uncontrollably, mirroring the current situation.

The five cities have been crafted from more than 5000 individual ink sketches. Initially captivating with its aesthetic appeal, but look closer and there is a complexity, unveiling the intricate nature -and fury- of urban development.

With more colour than Carmelo Buffoli used previously. At present, the artist is expanding on primary colours. An intuitive choice he says, only under-standing in hindsight what has been created. The colours symbolizing light, translucency, a dream state, poetry, or technocracy, danger, dirt.
